About CEP Calgary

Connecting Environmental Professionals (CEP Calgary) is dedicated to promoting opportunities for emerging and established environmental and sustainability professionals in Calgary. We host a speaker series, networking events, career workshops for emerging environmental professionals, and form part of the organizing committee for the national bi-annual GLOBE Forum Leading Change Forum for emerging sustainability leaders aged 19-35.

 

We are currently looking to expand into new ways of engaging environmental professionals in the Calgary market through special events and collaboration with other organizations.


Purpose of the position

Plan and organize CEP Calgary’s speaker series and support other special events. The successful applicant will work most directly with the CEP Calgary Management Team Lead and Management Team.

Duties and Responsibilities

CEP Calgary Board Members are responsible for the strategic direction and vision of the organization. The Board also oversees the financial management of CEP Calgary. The Treasurer monitors the ongoing financial viability and stability of the Organization and reports to the board on a regular basis. The treasurer will oversee financial matters in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing documents and legal requirements, and report to the board of directors at regular intervals regarding the financial health of the organization.

 

In summary, the Treasurer is responsible for:

  • General financial oversight

  • Funding, fundraising and sales

  • Participating in the financial planning and budgeting process

  • Financial reporting

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Sufficient work and/or volunteer experience in the accounting or finance field

  • Experience in accounting or finance preferred

  • Motivated, self-starter with the ability to work with a high level of autonomy

  • Demonstrated values that align with the organizations three guiding principles – Education, Engagement and Employment

  • Willingness to attend regular Board meetings and CEP events as well as commit to sitting on the Board for a minimum of two years

  • Well established network within the sustainability and environmental field

  • Previous Board experience not necessary but preferred

Orientation and Training
Documents provided and additional support from the CEP Management Team Lead and existing Management Team.

Management Team Lead

Volunteer Term: Minimum 2 Years

Time Requirement: 3-4 hours/week; plus 3 hours/month for attendance at online or in-person events and up to 3 hours/quarter to attend Board meetings. Time requirements may vary throughout the year.

Purpose of the position
Ensure the successful operation of the CEP Calgary Management Team.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will work directly with the CEP Board and is accountable to oversee the work of all members of the Management Team.

  • Guide the CEP-Calgary Management Team and work alongside the Board to ensure smooth operation of the Calgary chapter

    • Manage recruitment, engagement and retention of volunteers

    • Ensure a cohesive and collaborative team environment

  • Attend Board meetings, on request of the Board, to report to the Board on behalf of the Management Team

  • Proactively advise the Board on CEP Calgary chapter activities such as event updates/post-event analysis, communications, membership, potential partnerships, and other areas in which CEP Calgary could improve on fulfilling its mandate to its community (CEP members, interested non-members, and any other relevant stakeholders)

  • Attend CEP Calgary events or establish a delegate (approximately 1 per month, October-June)

  • Oversee event teams and Event Managers to ensure events are delivered in a timely, impactful and professional manner

    • May include leading/hosting collaboration with the Management Team and Board, participating in topic brainstorming for events, allocation of responsible people per event, helping event team determine how events will be planned, and following up with event team to ensure plans are executed in a timely and effective way.

  • Support the Communications Manager

    • Help gather suggested updates/content for CEP Calgary’s e-newsletter, website and social media accounts (e.g. community events, articles, current news, and topics related to the work that upcoming speakers are involved with)

    • Work with the Communications Manager to host an annual communications meeting with other chapters across Canada to share learnings

    • May include supporting the drafting, sending and analysis of a biennial (every two years) membership survey

Qualifications/Requirements
•    Excellent leadership and decision-making skills
•    Strong oral and written communication skills (ability to communicate effectively with people at all professional levels)
•    Proactive, self-starter with the ability to encourage and motivate a highly dynamic team
•    Strong organizational and time-management skills (ability to effectively organize and manage multiple initiatives and encourage others to do the same)
•    Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
•    Demonstrated values that align with the organization’s three guiding principles – Education, Engagement and Employment
•    Willingness to attend regular CEP Calgary events as well as commit to volunteering with CEP Calgary for a minimum of two years
•    Previous work or volunteer experience as a team leader or supervisor is an asset

Support from the Board of Directors related to CEP Calgary activities and strategic direction, and for overall guidance and governance.

Time Requirement: 1-1.5 hours/week planning; 3 hours/month for attendance at online or in-person events (rotating basis: not all events managers will be required each month)

  • Supporting the event team in attracting excellent speakers of interest to the environmental professional audience,

  • Bringing employment opportunities, external events, and other professional growth options to the attention of CEP members,

  • Attending Board meetings and CEP events on a regular basis (2-4 hours/month),

  • Providing guidance to the chapter volunteers, including the Chapter Lead, the Communications Manager, the Events Manager and, the Special Events Coordinator.
